Obit: Hertz, John (1866 - 1926)
Surnames: HERTZ GLENZER BREHM FIRNSTAHL ---------Source: COLBY PHONOGRAPH (Colby, Wis.) 02/18/1926 --------- Hertz, John (23 APR 1866 - 10 FEB 1926) John Hertz, one of the early pioneers of this vicinity, died at the Wausau Hospital Feb. 10, 1926, of acute pancreatitis, after an illness of only five days. Funeral services were held in the St. John's Evangelical Church, Sunday, Rev. Wegner officiating, by the Woodmen Lodge, and interment made in the Colby Cemetery. The deceased was born in Prussia, Germany, April 23, 1866, thus reaching the age of 59 years, 9 months and 18 days. He came to the U. S. in Oct. 1873, and lived in Dodge Co., Wis. until 1877, when he came to Colby, Wis. In 1894 he was married to Minnie Glenzer at Green Grove, Clark County, which union was blessed with two daughters, Edna Hertz and Irene Hertz, now living at Stevens Point. Mrs. Hertz preceded him to the distant shore, death taking her in 1903. His chief occupation was cook, although, for a number of years he conducted the Colby House, now August Mueller's. Besides his two daughters, two sisters and one brother mourn his departure, namely: Mrs. Minnie Brehm, Athens, Mrs. Frank Firnstahl, Colby, and William Hertz, Edgar. Those from out of town here for the funeral were: Nick Miller, son and daughter, Mrs. Robert Hertz, Mrs. Mildred Johnston, all of Stevens Point, Walter Hertz, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hertz, John Hertz and Mrs. Fred Johnson, all of Edgar. The deceased, having lived here many years, had a wide circle of friends who will remember him a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and sturdy constitution. He continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits until the time of his death. At that time he was employed as cook in one of Connor's camps near Stratford. His industrious nature, no doubt, largely contributed to his sunshiny disposition. He met most of the conditions and situations of life with a smile, although he was a practical, mater of fact man. |
