Obit: Salter, John W. (1852 - 1927)
Surnames: SALTER ---------Source: COLBY PHONOGRAPH (Colby, Wis.) 11/17/1927 --------- Salter, John W. (5 FEB 1852 - 15 NOV 1927) After being in failing health for more than a year, John W. Salter, pioneer citizen of Unity, Wis., passed away at nine o'clock Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at Unity. He is survived by the widow and several sons and daughters. Mr. Salter was very prominent in the Odd Fellow circles of Wisconsin and for a number of years served as treasurer of the Wis. encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Mr. Salter was born Feb. 5, 1852 on a farm near West Bend, Wis. and received his educational training in the common school and the University of Wisconsin. In 1880 he organized the high school in Unity and served as its principal for three years, following which he entered the mercantile business in his home community. He also was interested in farming and in the production of pure bred Red Polled cattle. In politics he was a Republican and at one time served his constituents as assemblyman of the first district of Marathon Co., Wis., to which office he was elected on Nov. 5, 1922. He also served a number of years on the Marathon board of supervisors. Among other offices he held were those of postmaster of Unity under President Arthur, a member of the board of education, and president of Unity State Bank. |
