Surnames: APFELBECK SCHRAUFNAGLE THORNZILKE BRILL ---------Source: COLBY PHONOGRAPH (Colby, Wis.) 06/06/1929 --------- Apfelbeck, Mary Jane (24 FEB 1855 - 3 JUN 1929) Mary Jane Apfelbeck passed away at her home in Colby, Wis. Monday, June 3, 1929, at 1:15 p.m. at the age of seventy-four years, three months and nine days, old age being the cause of her departure to the heavenly goal. Impressive funeral services were held at the catholic Church, Rev. Lachnit officiating, Thursday morning, June 6th, and interment made in the Colby Catholic Cemetery. The deceased was born in Fond du Lac, Wis., Feb. 24, 1855, and was married to Joseph Apfelbeck June 27, 1878, in Fond du Lac. Fifty years ago, she and her husband came to this locality and homesteaded on a tract of land in the town of Hull, Marathon Co., Wis., which was still a vast wilderness, but by hard work and privations, built a fine farm. Her husband died Nov. 12, 1925, and three children also preceded her in death. The children still living are all of Colby, namely: Mrs. Norbert Schraufnagle, Mrs. Rose Thorn, Frank, Peter, Leo, Carl, Ben, Ernest and Albert. One sister, Mrs. Albert Zilke of Fond du Lac, and one brother, John Brill of Milwaukee, also mourn her departure. The deceased, the mother of a large and gifted family, was a woman of strong Christian character, and also never forgot the hospitable ways of the early pioneer. None ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of genuine hospitality, so characteristic of the early pioneer settlers. |
