SOLD BORROWED HORSES: One day last week a very innocent looking man drove into this place and put his team up at one of our hotels. After being here some hours he started out to sell the rig, and at the low figure he placed on them, he was not long in finding a buyer. The price he asked was low but nevertheless it took a pool to buy them and a stock company was formed, consisting of K. Thompson, John Raab and Peter Bast. The outfit offered by the stranger consisted of a span of ordinary horses, buggy and robes. He seemed to be honest and gave as a reason for selling that he wanted to leave these parts, which afterward proved to be correct. The three purchasers were ignorant of anything crooked and when the money was paid, $50, they took in return a bill of sale of everything. After disposing of the outfit the fellow who gave his name as Frank Mack, remained over another day and night, spending money very freely. The day after his departure Sheriff Page and Duck Wheaton came over from Neillsville. They were looking for the horses which they claimed had been rented from Wheaton’s livery stable by the man Mack. They were not long in locating them and of course demanded the property. The three innocent purchasers lost the amount they had invested and the next time they buy cheap horses they will know from whom they buy (Marshfield Times) The above article has reference to the theft of the horses and buggy, stolen from Duck Wheaton, as was mentioned in last week’s Press. Up to present, Mack has not been apprehended.
