News: The Clark Republican and Press 11-30-1899
Source: The Clark Republican and Press Date: 11-30-1899 To Try Socialism: A colony has been organized in Neillsville to try a small installment of Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward plan of life. Those concerned are the families of L. B. Ring, M. C. Ring, Judge O’Neill, A. B. Marsh, Lute Marsh, and perhaps others. They have rented the rooms of Dr. Esch, over the post office, which will be used as a communistic kitchen and dining-room. The colony will hire a competent cook and such other domestic help as may be needed, and will take their meals together. A system of meal tickets has been devised, which, though simple, will distribute the expense properly. It is thought by the participants that there will be a considerable saving in the matter of household help. Fuel and other expenses that will make the scheme a paying one to say nothing of the social feature. The practical workings of the scheme will be full of interest. They expect to get to housekeeping this week. |
