In the passing of Daniel Webster Merriman, aged 85 years, one of the two remaining Civil War veterans of this community (Owen, Clark County, Wis.), departed from the ranks of life and is now numbered with those who have gone before. He died at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Perkins, Saturday morning, shortly before eight o'clock, the cause of death being old age.

Mr. Merriman had been confined to his bed for the past seven months, and previous to that time had been in failing health, but was able to be up most of the day. Death came to him following this illness quietly with members of his family at his bedside.

He enlisted in the services of his country at the outbreak of the Civil War for a period of two years, and after serving out his enlistment, he again re-enlisted for another two years, and was then mustered out of service when the war closed. He entered the service at the age of 15.

At the close of the war he went to Eau Claire, where he became engaged in the lumbering business, for a number of years operating a shingle mill at a place known as Badger Mills, between Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls. He followed this business for a number of years, after which he became a scaler of logs in the woods, being employed by some of the large lumbering concerns in that vicinity. Some twenty years ago he came to Owen and secured employment with the John S. Owen Lumber Co., as a scaler in their camps, and after being employed there for a number of years, became night watchman in their yards here. He continued in their employ until he reached the age of 75 years, when he retired from active life.

Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Perkins, Monday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. Guy D. Christian, Vicar of St. Katherine's Church, officiating, after which the body was taken to Eau Claire for burial. Six members of the Van Hizen Post of the American Legion, acting as pallbearers.

Besides his daughter, he leaves to mourn one son, V. D. Merriman of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Cary Smith of St. Paul and Mrs. Floyd Holly of Cable, Wis. Those from away to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. James Garland of Minneapolis.
