Elizabeth Howard was born in Lancashire, England, Nov. 6, 1837, and died at Humbird, Clark County, Wis., Dec. 29, 1907, aged 70 years, 1 month and 23 days.

She accompanied her parents to this country when nine years of age and settled in Waukesha Co., Wis., in 1846. Here she grew to womanhood and on Feb. 13, 1856, was united in marriage to Isaac Horel. A few months later, in June, the young couple came to Clark County, then a trackless wilderness. The trip across the country was made by ox teams and took several weeks. Now the same trip is only a matter of a few hours.

They settled a few miles north of where Humbird now stands, and remained until 1861, when they moved to their farm home west of town, where they have since resided. This winter they moved to town, intending to remain until spring; and here the Dark Angel knocked at their door to break the tie that had bound them for over half a century.

Mrs. Horel was a woman of high moral character, whose sterling worth and undying principles are imbedded in this section and it was upon such that the present generation builds its faith. Daily we are facing the great mysteries of life and death; mysteries which none of us can fathom and only in part can we apprehend their meaning. Life is ours in all its richness and with all its possibilities. Death also is ours with all of its dread, its sorrows and tears. The cradle and the grave are closely allied. Each child of earth turns from the rising of the sun toward the setting. Sad indeed when death has robbed the home of its queen and the mother…..(some of my copy was cut off)…She was in her younger years an earnest and faithful worker, and it was to give her more opportunities to attend its services that Mr. and Mrs. Horel moved to the village last fall.

Mrs. Horel had not enjoyed good health for some time, but only recently had she been considered seriously ill. Only Christmas day was she taken to her bed, but from that time she gradually grew worse until death terminated her long and well spent life Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in this village on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 31st, conducted by Rev. W. B. Good, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, and interment was in the Mentor Cemetery. Many relatives and pioneer friends of the departed were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of one whose life was well lived, whose work was well done.
