The death of Henry Babler, cashier of the First State Bank on Dec. 12, 1913, deprived this vicinity of one of its progressive and most respected citizens. Ill but a few days, and apparently on the way to a complete recovery, his untimely summons cast a gloom over the entire community. Everyone who ever had occasion to transact business at the bank spoke highly of Mr. Babler's kindly manner and accommodating ways. His death has made a vacancy in, not only the business circles of the community, but its entire activities, that will be a difficult matter to fill. He served the town of Mentor one year as clerk, and was a member of the school board at the time of his death. Mr. Babler was a member of Mound camp, M. W. A., the Farmers' Life Insurance Association, and the Beavers Lodge.

Henry Babler was born at New Glarus, Wis., April 23, 1875, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Albert Babler. When about five years old he moved with his parents to Monroe, and two years later they went onto a farm near Monticello. Mr. Babler grew to young manhood and graduated from the Monticello High School. About 1897 he went to Black River Falls and remained for four years in the employ of his uncle, Mr. John Babler. On Dec. 3, 1902, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Juliatte Williams, at Madison. They spent a year on a farm near Monticello, and then moved to Belleville, where Mr. Babler was engaged in the hardware business. Having disposed of his business there in 1905 he moved to Humbird, Clark County, Wis. to accept the position as cashier of the First State Bank. He was taken ill on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9th, and died at his home in this village Friday forenoon, Dec. 12, of uremia, three days after an operation for appendicitis.

The funeral services were held at the home Friday evening, conducted by Rev. F. M. Prucia, and the remains were taken to Monticello for burial, accompanied by the heartbroken wife and little daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Babler, uncle and aunt of the deceased, Miss hahn, and Mrs. Kretschmer. The burial services were held from the German Reformed Church in that city on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. Muehlmier. There was a large attendance at the services, many being present from New Glarus, Belleville, Monroe and other points to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed one. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, among them being designs from one of the Chicago banks, First State Bank, the Farmers, the teachers and school board, and Modern Woodmen.

Mr. Babler leaves to mourn his death his wife and little daughter, Charline, two sisters, two brothers and an uncle. A brother-in-law, Mr. Hefti of New Glarus, died at about the same time as Mr. Babler, and was buried Sunday.
