Christorpher Burkhardt Posted4U@Charter.net on Tue, 13 Feb 2001 Surname: BURKHARDT, WERTZ, MERTZ, NEUMAN, NACHTWEY Source: 1918 History of Clark Co., WI, by Franklyn, Curtiss-Wedge CHRISTOPHER BURKHARDT was born in Germany, and came to America with his mother at the age of 16 years, settling with her on a farm near Kiel, in Manitowoc County, this state. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army, and served three years, being three times wounded, once through the chest, once in the leg and once in the arm. After his honorable discharge he returned to the farm. After the death of his wife, in 1877, he removed to Clark County and engaged in farming near Thorp until his death at the age of 63 years. By his first wife Charlotte Wertz, he had two daughters, Mary A. and Rosa, the former of whom is now Mrs. Anton Nachtwey. His second wife, Mrs. Caroline (Mertz) Neuman, was a sister of his first wife. To this union there were born five children. Nina, Freda, Delia (who died at the age of 17 years), Alfred and Edward. 1906--Reseburg Ramblings – Bert Goff has sold his saw mill to Peter Heiser of Thorp. Peter Heiser is making arrangements to set his portable saw mill located northeast of Withee in operation.
