Niels P. Peterson, Blacksmith

Mr. Niels P. Peterson, a native of Denmark was born in 1840. He served in the marine artillery and navy of Denmark during the war of 1863 and 1864. He came to this country and to Wisconsin in 1867, lived at Fairweather and Waupaca. Moved to Colby in 1873. Is a blacksmith and wagon maker by trade, and has been in that business since living in Colby. He is the inventor of a new sleigh on which he has a patent and which is fast attaining notoriety and popularity. He employs from eight to ten men in his shops, and is doing a profitable business. The cut above represents the shops of N. P. Peterson, of the village of Colby. He does a large business in manufacturing and repairing wagons, carriages and sleighs, in horse shoeing and general black-smithing. Mr. Peterson has lately taken out letters patent on a sleigh knee which is fast attaining popularity. It has been practically tested, and pronounced "perfect," by men of experience. He employs quite a large number of men in his shops.

NIELS P. PETERSON, blacksmith, born in Denmark, June 10, 1840. Came to America in 1867, and to Wisconsin and worked at blacksmithing in the town of Fairweather, Fond du Lac Co. Went back to Denmark and then came to Waupun where he worked till 1869, then removed to Waupaca. His health failing he was compelled to give up his trade and went on to a farm. Here he lost his wife and sold his farm and went to Wausau, where he stayed until 1872, when he decided on coming to Colby, and while building shops here worked in Spaulding's mill at Unity. Opened business in Colby March 14, 1873. His first marriage was to Miss Christina Nelson, who died 1871, and in 1872 he married Miss Gunderson they have two boys living, twins, Ole and Nels, lost three, Sirina, Otto and Martin. Had five by first marriage Emma, Christian, Mary Martin and Hans. Mr. Peterson has held many Town offices and is Justice now.

The above photo was taken in Maplehurst, Taylor Co., WI.  The woman seated with a child on her lap is Susan Ann (Parkhill) Peterson, wife of Niels G. Peterson, with their son, Vernon Niels Peterson (born 11-17-1904).  Judging by the age of the child, the photo must be from around 1906 or 1907.  Contributed by Helen Blaha.
