Emanuel Lewis was Julia Markham's first husband. Apparently, N. H. Withee brought Emanuel back with him upon returning from the Civil War. At that time, Emanuel was only 5 or 6 yrs. old. Together, he and Julia raised and adopted a relative's two sons, Ross & Nate. We've been told these two boys were challenged, but were able to work as laborers on area farms. On the 1905 Census, Emanuel was 44, born in Alabama, of natives of Virginia and his occupation was farmer.

HISTORY OF STEELE BENAJMIN SCHOOL By Chas, A Varney 22 Apr. 1937 In 1871, the families of Thos, Steele, Chas. Patterson, Larry Drinkwine, Morris Markham, Curtis Markham and Mr. Baldwin being in need of school privileges for their children proceeded to build a house of logs 16 by 20 feet in dimension, made furniture of lumber, chinked the crack in the building, nicely pointed it up outside with mud and on the inside with lime. A big box stove stood in the center of the room. There were two windows in each side, (north and south side). The teacher had the west end and the outside door was in the east end. ------------------------------- Marion, Montana, April 15, 1937
Dear Old Friends: As I am unable to attend your dinner I will send my best greetings to all my old friends and neighbors. Lots of water has flowed under the bridges since the last time we met. After my days work is done, with my pipe and my dog by my side I dream of old Memories of those days that are now so long gone by, when I was among you all. I would be very much pleased to meet them once more. I am wishing you one and all many more happy days to come. I am very glad to be remembered by you. Your old neighbor and friend. Amasa Markham
