J. Woods Colburn. Mr. Colburn is one of the oldest residents of Clark County, Wisconsin, having come here from Grant in 1861, and lived here ever since. He was born in Orange County, Vermont, in 1820, where he lived until he was nineteen years old. In 1839 he went to New York, where he engaged in lumbering. He remained in New York until 1846, when he came to Grant county, Wisconsin. He lived in Grant county until he came to his present home in the town of Levis. He was married in 1851 to Elizabeth Blaylock, a native of Ohio. He has a good farm in the town of Levis, on which he lives and is now engaged almost exclusively in farming, although he has been quite largely interested in lumbering since he has resided here. He has held different offices in the town during the time he has lived here. He was town clerk of his town for seven years prior to 1883, and since that time has been, and now is, the treasurer of the town. This indicates that he has made a faithful and trusty officer. J. WOODS COLBURN is ranked among the pioneers of Levis Township, Clark County. He was born in Vermont, June 3, 1820, and received his early education in that State. When only six years old his father died, and while quite young was thrown upon his own resources.
Mr. Colburn came to Clark County, Wisconsin, in 1861, and engaged in sawmill work for several years. He has cleared up many acres of wild land both for himself and for others, and by his well directed efforts and economy has secured a competency. He has a nice farm located in section 1, Levis Township, five miles from Neillsville, which is well improved. Mr. Colburn was married forty-three years ago, to Elizabeth Blaylock. Their four children have all received a good education. One is deceased. His ancestors and also those of his wife originally came from Scotland and Ireland. Mr. Colburn was School Clerk of the township three years, School Treasurer four years and Town Treasurer for seven years. By all who know him he is regarded as a useful and upright citizen. In speaking of his early experience, Mr. Colburn remarked that the first team he ever owned was a pair of oxen that he bought on credit and paid for in full by hard work.
