Notes

"Greenwood Incident – Startled Greenwood citizen’s reacted variously to the perverted humor that led to a hanging in effigy in their community Friday, when this stuffed figure was observed dangling from light standard in the center of Main Street, bearing a sign “Jo Must Go – Go Home Joe.” The incident stems from a dispute between the mayor and council which has resulted in two men acting simultaneously as chief of police, Councilmen last month voted 3 to 1 not to renew Mayor Oscar Miller’s reappointment of Joseph Staresini as chief, and instead hired Leonard Braatz, Mayor Miller claims he has the power to make the appointments, and the council may then pass on the selection. Circuit Court Judge Bruce F. Beilfuss is expected to rule on the issue Monday. Sheriff Ray Kutsche, summoned to Greenwood, ordered the effigy cut down."  Greenwood Gleaner, (ca. 1956-1962)
