Byron Potter & Hannah Sparks Pickering Picture and Details Provided by the Pickering Family.
Byron Potter Pickering was born during the depth of the winter in South Gibson, Susquehanna Co., PA to Potter and Silona Pickering. He was the youngest of four children, his siblings being Armina (b. about 1827); Ephraim (b. 1828, d. 1915), Elizabeth (b. ca. 1832) & Byron Potter (b. Dec. 31, 1840). The Pickering family has a prosperous family with a rich American Heritage which has been traced back to Salem, Essex MA and John & Elizabeth (Lawrence) Pickering who immigrated from Ipswich, England in the early 1600's.
Byron Potter was almost 20 years old
when the Civil War began. While on the way to visit his brother, Ephraim, in
Plainfield, he enlisted and served until the war ended. In 1865 Byron returned
home and married Hannah Marie Sparks, niece
September 28, 1866, Byron married Hannah Sparks, the daughter of James Freeman and Sylvia (Calkins) Sparks. The children born to Byron and Hannah were: Edith Ethel Pickering (b. Sept. 11, 1867 in Great Bend, Susquehanna Co, PA); Helen Phoebe Pickering (b. Aug. 10, 1869 in Plainfield, WI and d. Feb. 10, 1938 in Eau Claire, WI); Myron Potter Pickering (b. Feb. 8, 1873 in Plainfield, WI and d. Sept. 18 in Crane, MT); Sylvia Silona Pickering (b. Apr. 14, 1875 in Nevins, WI and d. 1966); David Leon Pickering (b. Jul. 14, 1878 in Nevins, WI and died Feb. 24, 1968); Earl Wayne Pickering (b. Feb. 28, 1881 in Nevins, WI); Pearl Pickering (b. Feb. 28, 1881 and died Feb. 28, 1881); Chester Allen Pickering (b. Mar. 15, 1884, Nevins, WI); Jessie Eva Pickering (b. Apr. 7, 1889 in Nevins, WI and d. 1955).
According to the 1880 Federal Census, the Pickering family was living in Sherwood Forest, Clark Co., Wisconsin. At that time, Byron Pickering was 40 yrs. old and Hannah was 32 yrs. old. Their daughters were listed as Edith E. Pickering (age 13), Phoeba H. Pickering (age 11), and Sylvia Pickering (age 5). Their sons were Myron (age 7) and David (age 1). When their son, Myron was born 18 Sep 1873, the family was living in Plainfield, Waushara, Wisconsin. Myron married Bessie Borgers and she is buried in Clark County. Myron died 18 Sep 1966 in Plainfield, WI.
