Henry & Alvira (Shelley) Davids Submitted by Lani Bartelt We are seeking a photo and additional information.
Henry Davids was born June 1840 Stockbridge, Calumet Co., WI to Daniel and Margaret Davids. He married Alvira Shelley born about 1845 Brothertown, Calumet Co., WI ,daughter of Simeon Shelley and Sabrina Welch. Alvira was also married to Joel Julius Sampson Henry Davids was in the Civil War. He served in Co A 3rd WI Inf. and collected a pension from Unity, Brighton, Marathon Co., WI for wounds in his side, shoulder, and hands from that war. He died in 1880 and is buried in Union Cemetery , Brothertown, WI. Henry and Alvira had the following children: Dora Davids, Frances Davids, Leonard Davids, Emma Davids, Florence Davids, Ora Davids, Fred Davids, William Davids, Henry Davids, Edgar Davids, and perhaps six more Davids children who are unknown. Davids, Sampson, Shelley and Welch are all Brothertown Indian family names. Children Dora Davids born Sept 1866 married Styne Frances Davids born 1871 married Hall Leonard Davids born 1873 Emma Davids born 1874 married Daughty Florence Davids born 1876 married Orville Bion Orton and they had the following children: Edgar Stanley Orton, Amos Henry Orton, Greeta (Greta) Bell Orton, Frederick Orton and two other Orton children who died young Ora Davids born 1877 married Abbot Fred Davids born 1879 William Davids born 1883 Henry Davids born 1887 Edgar Davids born 1890 and maybe six more Davids children I believe Alvira married Joel Julius Sampson ,son of Clark David Sampson and Rozina Mathers first as they had the following child, Mary I. Sampson, born 24 May 1863 Brothertown, Calumet Co., WI. Joel Julius Sampson died 24 Nov 1913 Maple Valley, Oconto Co., WI Alvira died after 1901 Unity, Clark Co., WI Mary I. Sampson married Freeman Colby who was born 1863 Illinois Mary and Freeman had the following children: Guy, Myrtle, James, Alvira(Verna), Herma, Paul Colby Sr., Irene (Rena) Daily, and Louis Colby. Mary I. Sampson Colby died 5 Dec 1925 Marathon Co., WI. Guy Colby 14 Jan 1888 Unity, Clark Co., WI married Laura Wensole, daughter of Lousi Wensole and Martha Arnisen and Guy died 8 Nov 1918 Unity, Clark Co., WI no children are listed for them Myrtle Colby b 9 Dec 1889 Unity, Clark Co., WI married Hill and had children Reginald and Ona E Hill James Colby b 2 Jun 1891 Unity, Clark Co., WI Alvira (Verna) Colby b 11 Apr 1893 Unity, Clark Co., WI married a Colby Herma Colby b 29 Mar 1895 Unity, Clark Co., WI died 12 July 1952 married a Clementes and they had the following children: Donald R Clementes, Leonard Clementes, Vernon Clementes, Paul Colby Sr. b 3 May 1897 Unity, Clark Co., WI died 14 Nov 1964 Viroqua,Vernon Co,Wi married Norma and had child Paul Colby Jr. Irene (Rena) Daily Colby b 23 Feb 1899 Unity, Clark Co., WI married Bettzinger in LaCrosse, WI and had child Vern Bettzinger Louis Colby no information Additional Notes
Notes for ALVIRA SHELLEY: Source: Records Relating to the Kansas Claims of the New York Indians, application #986, filed by Almira (Shelley) Davids on Nov. 5th, 1901. Her address at that time was Unity, Marathon Co., WI. "The last I heard of Joel Sampson, my father, he was living and is residing at Brothertown, Wis. His present wife is Harriet Fowler Sampson." Husband and children all draw annuities as Stockbridge except Mary.
