Fred Bredemeyer

Fred Bredemeyer was born in Meeme, Manitowoc County, Wi in 1851

There is a J. Bredemeyer, Pg 34 on a plat maps for years,1872,1878 and 1893 Town 17 N - Meeme Twp - Range 22 E (this is probably John Bredemeyer, Fred's father's land). From John Bredemeyer's obit in the Colby Phonograph of Jan 3,1889 comes the following information:   John Bredemeyer was born in Oldenburg, Germany  on 6 Feb 1816. He came to America about the year 1845,stopped two years in Baltimore, and then made the trip to Wisconsin. Afterwards he returned to Germany where he married, and with his wife, immediately started for America again. He arrived in Wisconsin and settled in Sheboygan Co, where he resided until five years ago when he removed to New Holstein, Calumet Co, Wis. and has since resided there. He was the father of five children, one son (Fred) and four daughters, all of whom are living.

Fred has been a resident of Colby, Wi for 12 years. Of the daughters Colby people are best acquainted with Mrs. Alex Mohr, and with Mary, who spent a portion of last summer here John Bredemeyer died 15 Dec 1888 leaving a wife and all his children to mourn him.   From the information in this obit we now know his son Fred was born in Wis., probably New Holstein, Calumet Co, Wis.,   had four sisters, one of whose name was Mary, and another Sophia, who married Alexander Mohr and had at least one daughter, Helen, and another sister, Jennie, (see sources) and another sister, name are unknown:  and that Fred had been a citizen of Colby since about 1876. Unfortunately John Bredemeyer's wife is not named in the obit and there is only a Bredemeyer, J. 290 listed on the New Holstein  City Cemetery records online and his wife, is not listed in any Clark Co., Wisconsin cemetery listing  Perhaps she remarried after John's death..   Fred  was raised on a farm and later married Martha Lemmin. There is a birth record for a Martha Lemin, b April 26,1856 found in the Vital Records for Sheboygan Co, Wis.. Fred & Martha  had two children, Herbert, and Anna.   Herbert was born in Nov,1877 and died 24 Feb,1882. He died only three months after his fourth birthday. A few days before his death he was playing at his father's store. That Monday evening he complained to his mother, "Mama, I am sick" and from that time he failed and by Friday morning he had passed away. He died of scarlet fever. Funeral services were held at home and he was buried at Colby Memorial Cemetery, Colby, Wisconsin  From a  posting in the Colby Phonograph in 1902 and posted in the bios we have the following: Fred & Martha had a daughter, Anna, born in Colby, who was married on 19 Feb 1902 to George M Thompson. The wedding took place at the home of Fred & Martha in Colby, Wisconsin.  They were married by Rev E.G. Vischer in a quiet ceremony with only immediate relatives present. The groom, George M Thompson had been a station agent for the Wis. Central Co .in Colby, Wisconsin  for a year before the marriage. After the wedding the bridal couple drove to Abbotsford, where they boarded the limited for St Paul and Minneapolis to visit the sights for a few days before returning to make Colby, Wisconsin their home at March 1st.

*Note/Jan 2006  Where the Thompsons went  and what happened to them I do not know but there are no burial records in Clark Co., Wisconsin for them.   Fred & Martha Bredemeyer came to Colby, Wisconsin with Louis Pradt.    Fred purchased the store of W. R. Hintz and in 1878 established a general merchandise and also sold flour and feed.   The City of Colby, Wisconsin was incorporated on April 23,1891 and Fred Bredemeyer was an early Councilman for the city.

After about thirty years he sold the stock to Galles and Sommers of Green Grove, Wi. A "Going Out of Business" notice ran in the Colby Phonograph newspaper stated " Having disposed of my stock, the transfer to take place about June 1st in! the meantime to reduce my stock of Youth's Boys and Childrens' Suits and  Dress Goods I offer them at Greatly Reduced Prices. Do not pass this up for if you do you will be the loser, for few have many other bargains to close out. F Brenemeyer, Colby, Wisconsin." (copy of actual notice in sources) When Fred Bredemeyer died I have found no information and there is no death date listed on his record at the Colby Memorial Cemetery, Colby, Wisconsin.  Fred and Martha and their young son, Herbert Bredemeyer  are all  buried at Colby Memorial Cemetery, Colby Wi. I also found another Bredemeyer listed with birthplace as Colby, Wisconsin named Helen, daughter  of Alexander Mohr and Sophie Bredmeyer.  Sophie was a sister to Fred and she and her husband, Alexander Mohr did live in Colby, at least for a time.

In Google searching the name Mohr I found only two mentions for the name which I have included in my sources. Neither mentioned Alexander Mohr by name but I have listed them both in my sources.   Their daughter, Helen married Alexander Benjamin Rosenheimer, son of Joseph & Sarah Rosenheimer on 22 Sept 1909. . Helen was b 27 June 1884 in Colby, Wis. and died 18 Nov 1973 in the Samaritan Home, West Bend, Wis. at age 89. She is buried at the Rosenheimer Cemetery, Slinger, Wis. Her occupation was secretary for the St Paul Railroad.   Alexander was born 12 Oct 1883 in Slinger, Wis. and attended grade school in Slinger, Wisconsin Academy in Madison, Wis. and UW Madison class of 1905  d 26 Mar 1944 in Richfield, Wis. He was killed in a car accident near Ritchfield. He is said to have had blue yes and black hair.   He was the caretaker of the Rosenheimer Family Cemetery and operated a grain and feed business A.B.R. Grain Company. He also ran Rosenheimer's Mill from 1916 to 1938 when he formed a partnership with Oscar Zwarld and in 1942 he sold his interest in the mill to Oscar.  Alex continued his dealing with farmers until his death.   After their marriage they moved to Houston, Tx where Alexander operated a Reo automobile agency. They returned to Slinger in 1911 and built the home in which their son Richard now resides at 210 W Washington, next to the Rosenheimer Family Cemetery. Richard joined his father in the grain and seed business in Slinger and took over the business around 1916 operating it alone until about 1930 when he! joined in partnership with another man. He is also the current caretaker of the family cemetery.   Alexander & Helen had the following children: Josephine, born 1912; and  Richard born 1916;  For more information on this family please see the source list.
