The George & Helen Stark Farm in the early 1900's

The photo above was taken from George Stark's "Little House" where he and his family lived until the mid 1940's.  The corner edge of that former residence can be seen to the far left of this picture.  This farm comprised the entire section 11 of Mead Township and was located just across the road from the Maplehurst School.  The farm buildings pictured here burned down in the late 1940s.

In the 1945 photos above, both silos on George Stark's family farm can be seen in the background.  The cement silo on the left was used for silage and the wooden one to the right was used for ice.  Blocks of ice were cut from the Black River in the winter and stored inside this silo between layers of sawdust.  This ice would last the family all summer long and their daughter, Janet, (pictured with her dog on the left and atop her pony in the right photo), remembers climbing inside with the ice to cool off on hot days.

The Farm in the 1960's

In later years, the buildings on the George Stark Farm were rebuilt.  The new barns can be seen the photo above which was take when the property was owned by Fred and Bernice Fetting Family.  At that time, the farm coved about half of section 11.  George and his family moved to the city of Greenwood, WI in 1951.
