Jesse C. Crane, Civil War Soldier 1826 - 1922
Jesse C. Crane was born April 12, 1826 in Pennsylvania. His parents were Calvin and Jemima (Quick) Crane who were both natives of New York. Jesse was the seventh child of twelve. His siblings were: Joseph, b. 9 Mar. 1812; Phebe Ann, b. 20 Mar. 1814; Catherine M., b. 26 Nov. 1816; Harriet A., b. 21 Oct, 1818; Oliver H., b. 1 Sept., 1821; Asa, b. 2 Feb., 1823; Martha Ann, b. 27 Aug., 1829; Abigail Caroline, b. 28 July, 1832 in Milford, Pikes Co., Pennsylvania; Manning Force, b. 27 Jan., 1835 and Abram J. Quick, b. 1833 (a nephew of Jemima whose parents were James W. and Sarah Jane (Westfall) Quick also resided with this family). Calvin and Jemima were married in Hanover Neck, Morris County, New Jersey, on November 16, 1810. Calvin died in 1870 in Shohola Township, Pike Township, Pennsylvania and was buried in the Handsome Eddy Cemetery, Shohola, Pike, Pennsylvania. He enlisted with Co. "B" of the 179th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry on October 16, 1862 serving as a Private and was discharged July 27, 1863. He died at his home October 2, 1922 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery. His niece, Mrs. John Arends of Greenwood, WI was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration. Jesse married Mrs. Mary H. Pounder (widow of Thomas Pounder/Pownder), nee Fitch, in Clark County on the 18th of November in 1880. She had seven children from a previous marriage to Thomas Pounder. Mary died April 4, 1902. Mr. Crane ran for office in the village of Greenwood in 1891, but did not get elected and he was a member of the GAR. He attended the reunion of the Clark County Civil War soldiers held in Neillsville in June, 1903. On January 27, 1906, he was elected as a post officer, surgeon, of the John A. Eaton Post No. 213 in Greenwood. In 1918 he was listed as a Red Cross member. Both Jesse and his wife, Mary, are buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery. Census Information
