John Asa Turner Scovel, Civil War Soldier 1842 - 1910
John Asa Turner Scovel/Scovil/Scoville was born March 4, 1842 in Stockton, Chautaqua County, New York. His parents were John T. Scovel and Olive Belden and he had one brother and three sisters. He married Mary Ann Olson in Spring Valley, Fillmore County, Minnesota on Nov. 17, 1867. She was born in Kragero, Norway on October 9, 1842 and came to America with her parents, Knute and Neut (Know) Olson in 1860, settling in Spring Valley, Minnesota. This couple had at least seven children, most of them being born in Minnesota. They came from Minnesota to Clark County, Wisconsin in 1878. Both John and Mary are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Eaton Twp. Clark County, Wisconsin. One child, John Ezra, born in 1879, is also buried there.
John A. T. Scovil
John Asa Turner Scovel (Scovil) was born March 4, 1836. His Veteran's Grave registration says he enlisted with Co. "F" in the 1st Minnesota Infantry on November 6, 1862 and served as a Private until he was discharged December 20, 1863. Unfortunately, his obituary mistakenly states he was a member of Co. A, the 2nd MN Mounted Rangers. Instead, we found him listed with the Roster for Co. F, 1st MN Cavalry (Mounted Rangers) and believe that to be correct (See military notes below). Our information was also confirmed by Matthew Anderson, the Archivist at the Minnesota History Society in Minneapolis, MN who also told us he was mustered in Nov. 6, 1862 and mustered out Dec. 2, 1863. He also said his surname was spelled "Scovel" on the military roster.
In 1867 John Asa T. Scovel was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Oleson in Minnesota, to who was born seven children, four daughters and one son mourning him.
He died May 2, 1910 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery. Ezra Scovel (Scovil) of Ladysmith, Wisconsin was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration.
