Abner Woodman Bailey (1826-1900)

Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin

Researched by Deb Sanger.

Abner Woodman Bailey was born Jan. 23, 1825, in Sutton, New Hampshire, the son of Dudley and Sarah (Woodman) Bailey.  Both of his parents were also born in New Hampshire.  He married twice, once at the age of twenty one to Minerva Twiss of Bradford, Merrimack, New Hampshire, on June 24, 1846.  Of this union, one child was born, now Mrs. M. T. William, the mother dying six months later.

March 16, 1852 married to Julia Tyler Clough, the daughter of James and Sarah (Sargent) Clough.   She was born April 3, 1833 in Orange, Grafton, New Hampshire. Their children were, Mrs. R. F. Kountz, Dorrance E. Bailey and Burton L. Bailey (1868-25 May 1918).  Dorrance E. Bailey was killed by lightning.

The family moved to Black River Falls, Jackson County, Wisconsin in 1865 and in 1873, took up residence in  Greenwood, Clark County, Wisconsin.  Abner was engaged in saw mill and sash and door work, and was always considered a first class workman.  He also worked for a time as an undertaker.  In later life, he lost the use of his lower limbs.  He died January 17, 1900 and was laid to rest in the Greenwood City Cemetery.

Julia outlived all of her children, but was lovingly cared for by her granddaughter, Kittie Kountz, in her senior years.
