Benjamin Bacon & Lucy R. (Wilbur) Crockett Levis Township, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Benjamin and Lucy Crockett are buried in the Levis Township Cemetery. He was born November 24, 1824 in Greenwood, Maine. She was born March 13, 1836. They were married April 22, 1850 in Lewiston Maine. They had eleven children; Augustine, Orington A. (first off-spring to die, November 2, 1852 at 8 months); Ella; Rosa; Ida; Lillian, Fidilla, Nellie E. (deceased November 13, 1864 when just seven days old); Orington A. and Avis Orington (twins); and Eddie.
Ben earned his living as a carpenter, but also farmed in Maine. In the Civil War, he served 3 1/2 years in the 16th Maine Regiment. He then re-enter civilian life in Elmira, New York where his family had made their home and were waiting for him. In 1870, he came west to Burroak Prairie (Washington Co., WI). There, he rented a farm and stayed for two years. In 1872, on the 20th of March, he homesteaded forty acres of wild land in Section 18, Washburn Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. There he built a log house and barn and began clearing fields with a team of oxen. Six years later, he moved to Section 6, Washburn Township and also lived there for six years. He operated the Carlyle Store ad Post Office.
Lucy R. (Wilbur) Crockett
In 1896, Lucy Crockett died and the following year, November 21, 1897, he married Lucretia Foote Salisbury, a widow from Neillsville, Wisconsin. In 1900, they moved to Merrill, Wisconsin and Benjamin died there, January 27, 1909. It is believed that when Lucretia died, she was buried in the Levis Cemetery next to her first husband. Military Service
Benjamin Bacon Crockett served as a private with the 16th ME Infantry. He may also have served as a private with the 1st Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps.
