Zephaniah Silvers (1834-1911) Braun Settlement, Warner Township, Clark Co., WI
“Zeph” was born 23 Jan 1834 in Mechanicsburg, Champaign County, Ohio, the son of Francis M. and Mary (McIntyre) Silvers, and brother of Teter Myers (b. 1828) and William (b. 1837). His fraternal grandparents were Dr. William and Mary (Myers) Silvers, Sr. Louisa Catherine married Zeph in Randolph County, Indiana, 20 Jul 1854. She was born 30 May 1834, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Loy) Foust. The Silvers and their daughter Mary Elizabeth (b. 13 Apr 1855) moved from Indiana to Marietta, Crawford County, Wisconsin, where three more daughters were born: Lucinda J. (12 Jan 1857), Matilda Ann (25 Nov 1859, m. Joseph Adams), and Louisa C. (20 Aug 1862), who was named after her mother. They had returned to Indiana by the time their son, Francis M. was born, 28 Nov 1864. “Frank” was just 2 months old when Zeph and his brother-in-law, Martin V. Foust, signed up with Co. A, 147th Ind. Inf., 24 Jan 1865. Thirty year old Pvt. Silvers stood 5'5'', had a fair complexion, gray eyes and brown hair. His unit was organized in Indianapolis and mustered in 13 Mar 1865, leaving for Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, 3 days later. They attached to 1st Brigade, 3rd Prov. Div., Army of Shenandoah, did guard duty at Charleston, and participated in the battles of Stevenson’s Station and Summit Point, Berryville, Harper’s Ferry and Maryland Heights. Pvt. Silvers was honorably discharged with his unit and mustered out 4 Aug 1865. Another brother-in-law, John T. Foust, served for Wisconsin during the same period. After Zeph’s safe return, the Silvers had 3 sons: David (14 Oct 1867), Morgan (5 Feb 1871) and Joseph (27 Nov 1873). At the time of the 1880 Census, the Silvers were living in Jefferson, Jay County, Indiana, but by 1890 they had returned to Marietta, Wisconsin. The family moved to the Greenwood area about 1898 to farm in the Braun Settlement, Warner Township. Morgan married Betsey Jane Loomis, the daughter of Henry and Margaret Ellen (Foust) Loomis. Joseph married Nora Havens, and when he died 22 Aug 1900 in a logging accident, he was buried in the Greenwood, WI City Cemetery, but has no headstone. Louisa died 11 Aug 1903, and “Grandpa Zeph” passed away 22 Jul 1911 in Morgan’s home. Both of them are buried in a shady spot in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Braun Settlement, Warner Twp., Clark County, Wisconsin.
