FRED BUKER, SR (1840-1924)


Fred Buker Sr. was born in Lippi Detmold, Germany, September 13, 1840. When he was six years of age he came to this country with his parents and resided in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County. At the age of 19 years he entered the Union Army and fought in the Civil War.


On December 23, 1865 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Schaper, who preceded him in death in 1909.


In October 1872 Mr. Buker and his family came to Clark County and at first live on what is now the Wm. Reineking farm. Later he purchased the farm on which he resided until his death. The trip from Sheboygan County to Greenwood was made by team.


Deceased was one of the founders of Immanuel Reformed Church on the West Side and was a true Christian, a kind father and loving husband.
He died on Wednesday, October 29, 1924, having reached the ripe old age of 84 years, 1 month and 16 days.


He is survived by two half brothers, Condrad Humke of Sturgeon Bay and Henry Humke of the West Side, one sister, Mrs. Fred Arpke of Sheboygan County. He also leaves three sons, Fred of the West Side, Edward of Greenwood and George on the homestead, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Decker of the West Side and Mrs. John Steigert of St. Paul, Minnesota. He is also survived by 17 grand children and 5 great grand children.
Funeral services were held from Immanuel Reformed Church last Sunday afternoon, Rev. O. Vriesen officiating. The body was laid to rest in the West Side Cemetery.


An unusually large crowd of relatives and friends attended the funeral to pay their last respects to one who was loved by all.
