MERKEL MODEL

Jacob Merkel, father of Joe Merkel of this city (Greenwood, Clark County), passed away at the Marshfield Hospital Wednesday, Dec. 16th. His health began to fail two years ago and within the last two months he suffered two strokes of paralysis. During the past year he and his wife have been making their home here with their son Joseph Merkel and family.

Mr. Merkel, who was born in the eastern part of this state, was 81 years old. Having learned the trade of wagon maker, he entered into partnership with his brother, John, a blacksmith, to conduct wagonmaking and blacksmith shop, which was in a small community near Milwaukee. Some years later they disposed of this business and came to the section known as Weigelsdorf, near Marshfield to engage in farming. Their places adjoined each other. In 1915 Jacob disposed of his farm and moved with his wife to Marshfield to live in retirement. Their home was there until last fall, when they came to Greenwood to make their home with their son Joe.

He was married in Washington County, Wis., in 1869. His wife died 35 years ago. About two years afterwards he was married again.

Surviving him besides his wife are the following children: John C. Merkel, Weigelsdorf Joe Mrekel, Greenwood Frank Merkel, Marshfield Mrs. Emil Model, Butternut and Lawrence of Manitowoc. He also leaves two brothers, John H. and Conrad Merkel, Weigelsdorf.

The deceased was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and he was highly respected by all who knew him. He was spoken of as a good husband, father and neighbor, a true friend, and as one who was ever ready to extend a helping hand to those in need or distress.

The funeral was held from St. John's Catholic Church, Marshfield at 9:00 o'clock Saturday morning.
