JOSEPH MERKEL


Greenwood A heart attack Friday morning claimed the life of Joseph Merkel, 81, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Hare, Greenwood, Clark County.


A rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hill Funeral Home, where the body will repose beginning that afternoon. Services will be held there at 8:30 a.m. Monday and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.


The Rev. Edward Hartung will officiate and interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery at Marshfield.


Mr. Merkel was born in Sheboygan County Dec. 29, 1874. After his marriage to Margaret Blum May 6, 1902 at Hewitt, the couple lived in New Prospect, Boltonville and West Bend before moving to Greenwood 36 years ago. They left here in 1937 to live in Marshfield, where Mr. Merkel was employed by Blum Bros. He returned here after his wife's death June 13, 1943.


Besides his daughter, he leaves six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was the last of his family of three brothers and one sister.
