Olson, Herman J. (1882 - 1965)

GREENWOOD--Herman J. Olson, former Clark County sheriff and former mayor of Neillsville, died Tuesday afternoon at his home here. He had observed his 83rd birthday on March 21.

Mr. Olson was born in Norway on that date in 1882 and came to this country with his parents at the age of 2. He was educated in Chicago and was married there in 1904 to Ida Caroline Anderson, who died in 1952. He worked as a bookbinder in Chicago.

The Olsons came to Greenwood in 1912, and Mr. Olson engaged in farming in the town of Warder for many years. He was elected sheriff in 1926 and served six terms in the office between that year and 1945.

He was employed by the American Stores Company in Neillsville for 3 years and was also a justice of the peace before he became mayor in 1956, serving for four years in that capacity.

He is survived by two sons, Herbert of New London and Roy of Loyal, and three daughters, Mrs. Roderick (Arlene) Lewis, Minneapolis Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Suggs, Chicago and Mrs. Lois Guest, Neillsville.

There are six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Georgas Funeral Home on Fifth street at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Greenwood at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Arvid Myhrwold will officiate at both services, and burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning tonight.
