Cole, Martha Jane (1864 - 1955)


GREENWOOD, CLARK COUNTY--Funeral services will be held here Wednesday for Mrs. Martha Cole, 90, widow of Dr. B. A. Cole, Clark County physician, who died Monday afternoon, Nov. 21, 1955, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Johnson. Death was due to old age complications.


Friends may call at the Stabnow Funeral Home, where the final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Lawrence Oman of Chippewa Falls officiating. Burial will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery.


The former Martha Jane Compston was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, on Dec. 3, 1864, and attended school there. She was married to Dr. Cole in Vernon County, Wis., on May 1, 1888, after which the couple resided at West Lima, Richland County.


When in 1911 the doctor's health began to fail, he retired and moved with his family to a farm in the town of Butler in Clark County. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary there in 1938.


After Dr. Cole's death on Dec. 15, 1942, Mrs. Cole made her home with her only son, Bird Cole. He died in 1951 and since then she had been living at various time with her four daughters. She was a member of the Christian Church of West Lima.


Daughters who survive are Mrs. Henry (Sarah) Dittner, Fall Creek Mrs. George (Mary) Steinhaus, Cornell Mrs. Bethel Beckman, Eau Claire and Mrs. Leonard (Lois) Johnson, Greenwood. Other survivors are 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren a sister-in-law, Mrs. Belle Compston, and a nephew, Noah, both of LaFarge and a niece, Mrs. Anita Lawton, Viroqua. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
