Sommer, Marlyn J. (1926 - 2001)


Marlyn J. Sommer, 74, Curtiss, Clark County, died on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen, where he had been a resident since March 2000. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service, at noon, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Green Grove, on Saturday, June 23. The Rev. Dr. Paul Hunsicker will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.


Marlyn James Sommer was born on Sept. 8, 1926, in the town of Green Grove, to Theodore and Hertha (nee Woik) Sommer. He attended Owen area schools and after completing his education, served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. He married Karen Hansen on Sept. 18, 1954, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. After a brief period of residency in Wausau, they purchased a farm in the Atwood area, where he farmed and worked for Kraft Foods, Milan, until retiring in 1987. He loved spending time taking care of his flower gardens, yards, and farm pond.


Survivors include his wife, Karen Sommer, Curtiss; two sons, Tod (Robin) Sommer, Rochester, Minn.; and Mark Sommer, Missoula, Mont. one brother, Vernon (Jeanette) Sommer, Curtiss; a twin sister, Marilyn (Leonard) Wachsmuth, Arlington Heights, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents two sisters, Ruth Schuette and Eileen Hardrath and one brother, Donald Sommer.


In Lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to a charity of choice or the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund.


Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal, is assisting the family with arrangements.
