Hitchcock, Edward Payson (1843 - 1880)

Edward Payson Hitchcock, well known to many readers of this paper, died at Black River Falls last Sunday morning, March 21st, 1880, of consumption.

The deceased was born in Troy, N.Y., Jan. 11th, 1843, and came to Black River Falls in 1857, which has ever since been his home. He enlisted in Co. G. of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry in 1861, and served faithfully for three years, participating in every action in which the regiment engaged, including Perryville, Stone River, and many others of the hard fought battles of the war. His bravery was ever the admiration of his companions, to whom he endeared himself, as he did to his companions in civil life, by a spirit of self-sacrifice, an ever cheerful disposition, and a vivacity and kindly wit that always made his presence agreeable. Though an unkind Fate, that deprived him in boyhood of an honored father, dealt harshly with him at every turn in life, we do not think anyone ever heard a murmur from him. In all the battles of life he bore his part bravely, and in looking over an intimate acquaintance with him dating back over twenty years, we cannot recollect ever seeing him angry or hearing him speak ill of anyone. His long sickness, dating back several years, was borne with his accustomed fortitude, and death at last stilled a brave and unrepining heart.
