Hewett, Sheldon B. (21 MAY 1842 - 20 JUL 1891)

Died, July 20th, 1891, about 10 o'clock a.m., at his residence near Tavares Fla., Sheldon b. Hewett, aged 49 years and two months.

His illness was long and severe. In Feb. last he was taken with the "grippe," which was followed by pneumonia. During the time there have been fluctuations of improvement in his condition, with corresponding depressions, giving rise now to expectations, giving rise now to expectations of recovery and then to painful fears. At last death came and ended the struggle.

Mr. Hewett was born May 21st, 1842, in the town of Minerva, Essex Co., N.Y. At 20 years of age he removed with his father's family to the state of Wisconsin. In the fall of the year 1883 he came with his family to make their home in Florida. He had previously purchased a homestead here and had begun improvements, where he has since lived and his family remain. He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters.

Mr. Hewett has met with a large success, and his orange industry and tasteful home evidence to the fact of indefatigable industry, conjoined to the most approved skill. He has been regarded as an authority in his line, and many are the cases where a careful following of his methods and advice has saved beginners from those mistakes so common and losses so great contingent upon the experimental condition of pioneer life.

He has had witness to the fullest confidence and largest esteem of the community. He has been an ideal neighbor and no sacrifice has been too great for him to undertake for those in trouble. His memory is treasured in grateful remembrance.

His funeral services were attended at his home on the 21st, where a very large representation from both Eustis and Tavares, as well as from other towns, gathered to sympathize with the bereaved family, and to follow the remains to the burial (Tavares Herald)

He was the brother of our townsman, James Hewett, and one of the old resident of Clark County, having resided in the town of Hewett, Clark County for many years before moving to Florida. (Excerpt from the 7/23/1891 R P)
