Boardman, Samuel C. (10 Jul 1829 - 16 Jun 1900)

S.C. Boardman, one of the oldest residents of Neillsville, Clark County, died at his home in this city Saturday morning, June 16, 1900.

It is thought that Mr. Boardman was probably the earliest settler residing in the county at the time of his death, having come into this vicinity in Dec. 1852. While not having engaged in active business for several years, he continued to keep in touch with local affairs and was well known by nearly everybody for miles around. Samuel C. Boardman was born in Barrington, Yates Co., N.Y., July 10, 1829. He came to Columbus, Wis. in Oct. 1849, and removed to Waushara County in June 1850. He resided there about two years, when he came upon Black River, where he went through the varied experiences of the pioneer and lumbering days, engaging in mercantile and saw mill business and taking an active part in business and political affairs. He was the first postmaster in Clark County and helped to organize civilization in this then wilderness. Mr. Boardman was a Free Mason of high standing he was always at home in the lodge room, all the tenets and traditions of Masonry were dear to his heart, and he never tired of teaching novitiate of the order.

The funeral was held at the house, Monday afternoon with Masonic ceremonies Black River Lodge No. 32, A.O.U.W., of which he was a member, joining. His wife and daughter Frankie, who have so faithfully ministered to the father's comfort during his declining years have the sincere sympathy of their wide circle of friends. Among the relatives from abroad who attended the funeral were : Mrs. Caroline Pulver, of Rockford, Ill. Mrs. M. Porter, of Columbus, Wis. sisters of Mrs. Boardman, Mrs. D. B. Johnson, of Merrillan W. H. Sheffer and son of Alma Center Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Straight of Eau Claire L.A. Arnold, of Minneapolis and C. B. Arnold and wife, of Marshfield.
