C. Cornelius & Co. has shown us a letter from a patent attorney at Washington dated Aug 16^th stating that their application for a patent on Washboards has been allowed. Cornelius & Co. have also secured a patent on their machine for making glass washboards.

The city schools opened Monday with a large attendance. Some departments of the main building were overcrowded and Prof. Oakley was obliged to send many pupils from the south side to the north side school. The rooms are now well filled on that side, and great relief obtained from overcrowding in the main building.

We find the following birth notice in the Black River Falls Banner: "In Chicago, Monday morning Sept. 9 to Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Meacham , a daughter." George is well known here, where he learned his trade of printer. He married a Black River Falls girl, and settled in Chicago, where he is engaged at his trade.

J. C. Saupe has purchased the stock of goods of Sniteman & Paulus, on the North Side and proposes to sell goods at prices that will draw trade to Neillsville that has been going elsewhere.

H. J. Brooks has set up housekeeping at his residence on the North Side.

Rev. W. T. Hendren returned Wednesday from a visit at Independence.

Hunkey Lee encouraged the Jackson Co. Fair by his attendance there this week.

Rev. J. D. Brothers and wife visited at Menomonie and the twin cities this week.

Mrs. Jacob Rossman and Mrs. L.J. Rossman returned last week from their Ashland visit.

Mrs. R. M. Campbell , who has been visiting at LaCrosse, arrived home Monday.

Mrs. George J. Morgan left Saturday last for an extended visit at Bangor among relatives.

Mrs. E. T. Thomas and daughter of Chippewa Falls, are visiting with F.W. Whitcomb’s family.

Mrs. Dr. Lyman has returned from a month’s visit at Eau Claire and other points Northwesterly.

Fred Simpson and Tony Hein are gawping around Minneapolis and will take in the fair there.

Miss Carrie Gotham , who has been visiting her father and making a tour of the lakes is again at her home here.

Miss Ella Garvin has gone to Menomonie where she has charge of a department in the graded schools of that city.

H. N. Withee’s family went to the Minnesota State Fair Monday and Mr. W. went up Thursday to take in the sights.

Mrs. Fred Klopf and son Alfred came back from Milwaukee Tuesday after spending several days visiting among friends.

Oscar MacBride has successfully passed examinations for admission to the State University, and enters that institution on Monday.

J.W. Hommel, George A. Ure and Hank Klopf took in the practice at Camp Douglas this week where U.S. regulars are encamped.

James Flynn returned Wednesday morning from his eastern trip and is again in charge of the Neillsville locomotive. His family returns this morning.

P. S. Dudley and daughter, Mrs. Riley, went to Minneapolis this week, and Miss Laura Colburn accompanied them. Miss C. is to keep house for Mrs. Riley.

Charles Gallaher came home Sunday morning from Indiana where he accompanied his wife, who is visiting her parents. Mrs. Gallaher will remain several weeks.

Ed Hoffman, editor of the Chippewa Independent, is off on a vacation from the duties of pencil shoving and will look in Neillsville as one of the pleasure resorts he might visit.
