Biography of Jacob Kahn

Jacob Kahn married Rosa who was nicknamed "Rosie" in 1876 when she was eighteen years old. They had three sons, Edgar, Ira and Walter. Jacob was a long time employee of the National Cooperage and Woodenware Company. He was the treasurer of that company in Greenwood, Wisconsin in 1900 as is evidenced by the advertisement above.

Research

During the past week, Greenwood has been assured the location of a large stave and heading factory. A representative of the Hutchinson Cooperage Co. (later renamed the National Cooperage and Woodenware Company--see the ad above), of Peoria, Ill., had visited Greenwood and was offered twenty acres of land and a cash bonus to locate there. He has accepted the offer and will at once put in the new plant. The mill is to be 35ʼx70ʼ in dimensions with a dry kiln, 35ʼx90ʼ. It will be located the Central Depot. There will be 30 to 50 men employed at once, with an additional 20 men expected to be hired later. October, 1892, Clark Co. Press.

In 1892 or 93 the Hutchinson Cooperage Company of Peoria, Illinois, had a heading and stave mill on the north bank of Rock Creek, where they sawed staves and made heading from basswood, paying from $1.75 to $2.25 per cord for 34 inch bolts; and employed about seventy-five men. The company applied for a $1,000.00 bonus from the city and got it. In 1900 Kippenhan & Palms started a heading mill just north of the Cooperage mill, but it was destroyed by fire in 1904 at a loss of from $10,000 to $15,000. The Hub of Clark County (1853 - 1934).

Hutchinson Cooperage Company is a new business at Greenwood and will employ 30 men. All of the machinery for the business is new and has cost $15,000. The Clark Republican and Press Date: April 1893

“Joe” Kahn Dead.

Passes Away at the Sacred Heart Hospital After an Lingering Illness

The announcement of the death of Joseph Kahn, caused profound sorrow throughout the city. Mr. Kahn had long been a sufferer and had undergone several surgical operations. He knew weeks before the end came that he could not recover. Death released his suffering at 2:45 yesterday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital. The remains were, removed by Undertaker J. H. Fleming, to the residence of Jacob Stumm, 416 Babcock Street. Jacob Kahn, brother of the deceased, was in constant attendance at the bedside of the invalid for some days past, and was present when death came.

Mr. Kahn was at the time of his deceased, 38 years of age. He was born in Pilsen, Bohemia. Mrs. Kahn, who survives him, was Frances Joseph, prior to her marriage to Mr. Kahn. He was a prominent member of the K. of P. and the following are the notices to the members of that fraternity to assemble and arrange for the interment on Sunday.

O. B. B., and to all other friends who sympathy and condolence were so kindly manifested.
