The Greenwood Dairy, Clark County, WI

The Greenwood Dairy, owned by Theodore W. Mech, was awarded a first place rating in grounds beautification of cheese factories in a state-wide contest held in 1933.  The dairy was located 3 1/2 miles north of Greenwood, in Section 14 of Warner Township, about 1 mile north of the Hemlock Bridge, east of Hwy 73.  In subsequent years it became the Ashbeck Cheese Factory.

 

 

Two Clark County cheese factories have received first place ratings in the statewide contest for ground beautification, it was announced this week at Madison.  The factories honored are the Greenwood Dairy operated by T. W. Mech and the Willard factory run by Emil F. Mech.  The judges committee was composed of J. H. Farrell, of Marshall laboratories; Jas. G. Moore, G. W. Longenecker, Norman A. Morris and Franz A. Aust of the University of Wisconsin.  Mr. Longnecker is a son of Rev. and Mrs. G. W. Longenecker of Neillsville.  (Source, Clark Co. Press 1933)

 

**The Willard Cooperative Dairy was started by farmers in Willard and taken over by Emil Mech in 1929.  In 1935 they sold it to Laabs Dairy Cooperative, went bankrupt and was closed in the late 1960's.  (Historian--George J. Plautz, Jr.)
