The Hemminger Family of Hixon Township
JP Hemminger and his wife Belle moved to Wisconsin from Marshall Co., Indiana and settled in Hixon Township, Clark County, Wisconsin.Their land appears both in the 1905 and 1915 plat maps in Section 2.
JP split his land to each of is sons, John and Ivan. The land is on the corner of Hickory and Borglin Roads. The house that is standing is the original house, and the one that Ivan's family lived in. A bit to the east near a stand of trees are the remains of the house that John Hemminger raised his family in before moving to a new farm on the county line.
The two daughters, Maisie and Mamie both became teachers, I believe at a normal school in Ladysmith. They went they left Clark County, marrying and having families. Maisie married Martin Larson, Mamie married Ralph Amundsen. Mamie died in childbirth after her fourth child in North Dakota. Her sister Maisie's family lived close by, and she was left to care for all the children, her sisters' and her own four children. My grandmother recalls the times when Maisie would travel from North Dakota in the 1930s to Clark County. John and Maisie would travel to Door County to pick cherries, a lot of canning was going on in the Hemminger house back in Hixon, and Maisie would go home with food for the winter. Eventually Maisie moved to Washington state.
Ivan and John both raised their families in Clark County. Ivan married Mary Windorn and had four children. John married Marian Hamme and had five.
