Follow the River.......

Historical Recollections by Lula Mae Stewart

The national Guard was called and stationed at our corner to keep sightseers out. This was indeed a bad time for the people living in our area. But it could have been much worse. It was a year of no profits as buying all our feed for the cattle was very expensive. We were just thankful to be alive and well. These pictures were taken in the month of June 1958. Ruins of the dwelling on the John Lato farm, about four miles south east of Thorp. Where Mrs. (Alice) Lato was killed in a tornado which swept through the northern part of Clark County shortly after eight o'clock on a June evening in 1958. Her body was blown from the building and found in a nearby farm field. The cow in the basement, still alive, either fell or was blown there during the tornado. Traffic on 29 which is now County X was forced to detour around Owen when the waters of Brick Creek, swollen from the heavy rain which fell during the windstorm, covered nearly two blocks of the roadway.
