32nd Division Old Timers visit Clark County Jail Museum
On June 17, some 60 members of the 32nd Red Arrow Infantry Division/Brigade Old Timers Club (retired Wisconsin National Guardsmen) visited the 1897 Clark County Jail Museum in Neillsville. Every year the group gets together for a week long “summer camp” during the 32nd Brigade’s Annual Training at Fort McCoy. They visit units of the 32nd Brigade in the field and learn about the latest equipment and training and also share memories with current soldiers. During the week, club members also participate in tours arranged for them. In this photo, members of the club are viewing a portion of the museum leading to the old jail. 1897 Clark County Jail Museum makes impressive historical tour
The castle-like 1897 Clark County Jail Museum in Neillsville makes quite an impressive tour for anyone desiring a look into the past. The museum includes not only the jail but also the two-story residence portion of the building where each sheriff and his family lived during his term of office. Each room of the Victorian home features a collection of items unique to the time period and to Clark County. The jail portion of the museum houses old law enforcement equipment and two floors of six cell blocks. Each cell block features a historical display such as the barber shop and doctor’s office. The Museum also houses a collection of military artifacts and uniforms. The museum is open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each guided tour lasts about an hour. Group tours are available by appointment. Call 715-743-6444 or 715-743-6746 (Photo by Nancy Halterman/Clark County Press) |
