NHS Class of ’51 holds reunion

By Mary Ellen Johnson

The Neillsville High School Class of 1951 held its 55th reunion on Sept. 30th, at the “old” Legion Hall.  Out of a class of 61 graduates, 27 members were in attendance, plus 20 guests.

The afternoon was spent visiting and sharing memories and up-dates on our families.

We have nine classmates who are deceased: Don Burr (1982), DeWayne Ziegler (1984), Lois Larsen Marg (1991), Norma Brooks Asplin (1996), Don Hansen (1999), John Flitter (2000), Anne Kelley (2005), Jack Counsell (2005), and Adrian Hubing (2006).  They are missed.

We had a delicious dinner catered by Marty’s Foods, followed by a short meeting led by Don Asplin, Senior Class President.  The committee of Joanne Olson, Jerry Smith, Eileen Henchen and Mary Ellen Johnson were thanked for their efforts in planning a fun day.  Prizes were awarded and Don Asplin read some amusing anecdotes.  Plans were made for another reunion in five years, the 29th of Sept.  Photos were taken of class members.

Those attending were: Leland Appleyard and Martie, Sparta; Don Asplin and friend, Carol Floyd, Madison; Midge (Audorff) Lewandowski and son, Scott, Loves Park, IL; Dale Botnen and Joanne (fulltime RVers); Helen (Harwick) Bohac and Virgil, Merrillan; Eileen Henchen, Eau Claire; Bobby Kapfer, Black River Falls; Don Knutson and Audry, St. Paul; Gerald Marg and Shirley, New Berlin; Margie (Moberg) Klapatauskas, Withee; Shirley (Neillsen) Henderlong and Larry, Jackson, MI; Don Noll and Nancy, Two Rivers; Edith (Scholtz) Kunze and Bob, Holcombe; Gerry Schuld, Sun City West, AZ; Donna (Schultz) Kunze and Kenneth, Hernando, FL; Joanne (Schultz) Olson and Richard, Duluth; Mary Ann (Smith) Heuer and Ed, Port Edwards; Yvonne (Webster) Yaeger and Donald, Chippewa Falls.  All of the following from Neillsville:  Patricia (Aspen) Tesmer and Milford; Alice (Buchholz) and Jerry Smith; Edward and Jesse; Herman Hediger, Jr.; Mary Ellen (Holtz) Johnson and Jerry; Evelyn (Opelt) and Don Schutte.  Another guest attending was Algene Bradbury from the Class of 1952.

Sunday morning we enjoyed brunch at the Country Club – just hated to have the fun end.  Those attending were: Joanne Olson, Jerry and Alice Smith, Lee and Martie Appleyard, Eileen Henchen, Don and Nancy Noll, Gerry Schuld, Yvonne and Donald Yaeger, Herman Hediger and Mary Ellen and Jerry Johnson.

Now we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2011.
