Memories
This school was
between our place and Globe. From our place we would go out to the first road
(1 mile) and turn North, then at the next road (about 2½ miles)we would turn
East, at the end (about 2½ miles) we would turn South and it was located (about
¼ mile) on the S W corner where the road made a bend to the East. I knew Louis
Worchel and his father Ewald Worchel also Gene Worchel who's father was August
Worchel.
Louis' brother Harley was killed in WWII. I had known him also but not very
well.
August Worchel used to tell me he had worked on Abraham Lincoln's train as a
very young man. I was always fascinated, because I just couldn't even imagine
anyone that could have known Lincoln.
He was a very old man when I knew him and I remember the old fashioned wheel
chair he sat in. It was cane, had a high back and very large wheels. He and his
wife lived with their son Gene and Viola and Family. Gene's son was Calvin and
their daughter was Deloris.
Does anyone remember the ink wells in your desk? The teacher would fill them from a larger bottle. Also the dip pens that, if you weren't careful would drip ink on your desk or paper?
I had to laugh one day when I told my 5th son that he was just like a blotter,
he soaked it all in, but got it all backwords. His reply to that was, "Mom,
what's a blotter."
That is when I got started writing down a lot of these things, because I
realized he had no conception of what I was talking about.
I have also added a picture of the lamps we had in our
country grade school.
