Public Library Trustee Information

A library trustee is an individual who has been chosen to participate in the administration of one of the oldest and most significant civilizing influences in the history of the human race. There is but little doubt that back of all libraries, both ancient and modern, there have been trustees, governors, committees, or patrons, who administered their affairs, protected their staffs, and fostered their growth. The library trustee of today is part of a glorious on-going procession which started in the dim early history of civilization and will doubtless continue as long as civilization endures.

There are three levels of library trusteeship in the WVLS area. Local library trustees, county level trustees, and system trustees. Some people serve on more than one type of board.

Library trustees for all three types of boards are appointed under direction of the Wisconsin Statutes, Ch. 43.

In an attempt to provide trustees with easily accessible information which will help them perform their statutory tasks, WVLS offers this section of our web site to the 164 public, 49 county, and 15 system trustees in our service area.

Area librarians are also encouraged to review this area once in awhile and to make copies for their trustees. Even though they may not have home access to the Internet, trustees may find that printed copies would provide them with helpful resources (which they know are available through their local public library).

This is a listing of Internet (and a few printed) sites that public library board members will find particularly appropriate and useful to their duties and responsibilities as trustees. If readers are aware of other sites which they have found to be helpful, they are encouraged to submit those sites for inclusion in this list to the WVLS webmaster at annmarie@wvls.lib.wi.us
